January, 2006...

We should never forget what happened...

dachaumemorial.jpg
Memorial to the many who died at Dachau

There is a Jewish, Protestant and Catholic memorial on site.  However, the most touching memorial is this one in front of the main building.  It represents the pain and suffering that took place and is a sad reminder for all who see it.

"Work Is Freedom" is on the front gate at Dachau concentration camp.

2origbarricks.jpg

There were originally 34 barricks to house the Jews, but only 2 remain.  There are concrete outlines where the other 32 buildings stood.

This was the coldest day of our trip...

The smaller crematory could not keep up with the numbers, so the prisoners were put to work building a larger crematory.

ashfieldmemorial..jpg

In the woods out behind the crematories were the ashfields.  This is a Jewish memorial to all who perished.  As we walked through the path in the woods, a light snow began to fall...this was such a peaceful, spiritual, almost erie place.
Dachau was the first concentration camp used as a model for all the many to follow in and around Germany.

Some of our friends couldn't understand why we would want to visit Dachau Concentration Camp.  For us it represents true history that happened and we should be reminded of such attrocities, so we can pray they never happen again.
