We flew overnight on Singapore Airlines from San Francisco to Hong Kong;
and after 17 hours and passing over the International Dateline, we lost a day...
How does that work...like the "Twilight Zone"...

While on this trip we visited...
  • Hong Kong
  • Mainland China cities:  Shenzhen - Guilin - Xi'an - Wuhan - Chongqing - Beijing
  • China River Cruises:  the Li and the Yangtze Rivers
  • Singapore
  • Bali, Indonesia

Sampan in Hong Kong Harbor - housing option

Hong Kong Island...

Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region to the Republic of China. It has separate political & economic systems.  It is located in a group of islands just
south of mainland China.  Very crowded with a population of just over 7 million.

The people either live in a small 400 sq ft  condo in one
of the many high rise buildings, or a sampan in the harbor.
Makes you appreciate what we have in America.

Mainland China...

Below...a day cruise on the Li River where there are the strangest shaped hills and mountains.  With the sun shinning down, the mountains look like an illusion of shadows...very unique!

Right...we saw beautiful mountain views and lush forestry on the Yangtze River. Notice how low the river is by the watermark along the side of the mountain.

By the way, that is not our boat you see...
we are on the BIG ship behind this little one...
...and he better move over!

Terracotta Warriors and horses in Xi'an

Above & Right...The "Terracotta Warriors and Horses" is a collection of terracotta sculptures depicting the armies of Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China.  It is a form of funeral art buried with the emperor in 210–209 BC and whose purpose was to protect the emperor in his afterlife.

They were discovered in 1974 by local farmers in Xi'an.  Estimates indicate that the three pits containing the Terracotta Army held more than 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses and 150 cavalry horses, the majority of which remain buried in the pits nearby the Emperor's mausoleum.

Bali, Indonesia...

Now, we have left the hustle and bustle of China for a relaxing week in Bali, Indonesia...Yeah Man!

Bali is a small island not far from Vietnam and Malaysia located in the Indian Ocean.  Most of the island is poor, but tourism is a big part of their economy.  And we were glad to help...our five-star golf resort was an oasis on the coast.  It is also adjacent to the famous Temple Tanah Lot built in the 16th century and is a Hindu temple today.  You can only get to it by boat or wait until the tide goes out.  Very interesting...

Dazu Rock Carvings -
A UNESCO World Heritage site

The steep hillsides of the Dazu area in Chongqing contain an exceptional series of rock carvings dating from the 9th to the 13th century created by the monks of that time. They are remarkable for their aesthetic quality, their rich diversity of subject matter.

The carvings are known for their grand scale, aesthetic quality and rich diversity of subject matter as well as for being well preserved.

PANDA BEARS...
You cannot go to China without visiting
the Pandas at the Chongqing Zoo.
We saw Ling-Ling and You-You and
Sing-Sing....so, you get the drift on
naming Pandas?

Above...Ronnie & Kathy in Tiananmen Square on the 25th anniversary of the up-rising that killed so many protestors.  The Chinese government blocks out all mention of this event.  But in Hong Kong, they celebrate it.

Below & Left...Ronnie & Kathy standing on the Great Wall of China.  One of the few things on earth that can been seen from space.  Several
walls were being built as early as the 7th century BC.  Later they were joined together and made bigger and stronger, so now collectively they are referred to as the Great Wall of China.

Singapore...

Landed in Singapore, went through customs and re-boarded the same plane, same seat...why?
Well, we got our passport stamped, that's why!
Lovely country...

To Summerize...

After a grueling two weeks in Hong Kong, China, Singapore and a week relaxing in Bali, Indonesia, we can honestly say -

if you ever wanted to tour China...go to the Internet.  And you won't lose any days!

You will find the same pictures we took on our trip.  So, grab a nice juicy hamburger and French fries as you look through the photos...and think of all the bad Chinese food and experiences we had on our trip.

After visiting 4 countries on 12 flights – 30 buses – 2 river cruises, and lots of Chinese food…

It is always GREAT to be   HOME “SWEET” HOME…!!!
