November, 2006...
Tower Bridge at sunset on the River Thames |
London and surrounding countryside has much to offer any tourist. Tower Bridge, Tower Castle, Parliament buildings,
Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, Stongehenge, Bath...just to name a few of the major places
to visit...November, 2006
Big Ben is the bell (not the clock) named after master contractor |
Tower Castle is where many people were beheaded, including Anne Bolin, wife of King Henry VIII. |
Where do you start in London...there is so much history that is still active today. You could easily spend 2 weeks
in London and never see everything. We will have to plan another trip...
Gates to Buckingham Palace |
Changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace is a major event most mornings. |
London phone booths are found all over the city, so English... |
London Eye on the Thames River 30 min. rotation for full view of city. Neat... |
Parliament & Big Ben from the London Eye capsule. |
Below, we took a day trip to the countryside to visit Windsor Castle, Bath and Stonehenge. The castle is the country
home of the royal family and you think Buckingham Palace was large, this place is hugh. Couldn't get enough photos...everywhere
you looked was another great shot. More about Bath & Stonehenge later.
Roman baths in the town of Bath...if these walls could talk. |
Below...we have always thought you can't get good Mexican food anywhere else but Texas. That is until we had lunch
at the Texas Embassy in London. We didn't talk to anyone who worked there that was from Texas, but they got the secret
Tex-Mex recipe somehow. Also, it is nice to know just how far away you are from home.
Back in London's Trifalgar Square, the Texas Embassy |
Parliament Buildings are massive. They look like churches. |
Crown jewels are also kept at Tower Castle and of course changing of the guards. |
Anne Boleyn memorial, beheaded by her husband, the King, for not bearing a son! A little extreme... |
Buckingham Palace is hugh. This is just the front. It is built like a castle or fort. |
We were fortunate to get a good spot near the front gate for the changing of the guard. This took about an
hour. We knew it was going to take some time when the band marched on the front court and set up their music stands.
Everyone broke out in laughter when they started playing some Beatle songs. Queenie does have a sense of humor.
About a hour to change only 2 guards...this could be much more cost effective.
...and there are only 2 guards for all this whoopla, those Brits! |
I guess they lost a few visitors, so you see this on major corners in London. |
View of city from capsule on London Eye. Each capsule holds about 30 people. |
Above is the London Eye, similar to a Farris Wheel, but it has about 20 capsules that hold about 30 people.
You can sit or walk around the capsule and get a panarama view of the city and the surrounding areas. On a clear day,
you can see about 50 miles, but it was a little hazy the day we were there.
Windsor Castle is out in the countryside. This is a huge place. |
They change the guards at Windsor Castle as well. |
Left...the town of Bath, England was known for the hot springs of the area and the Romans built bath houses that were
known for wild parties and orgies back in their day. Mostly ruins today, the hot springs still flow, but not in use.
Oh, if those walls could talk...!
STONEHENGE
Stonehenge about 70 mi. from London in the middle of nowhere. |
WoW...how did Stonehenge get here? Stones had to come 20 mi. before the wheel was invented. |
The Fifth Beatle...wow, Ronnie is good. |
